Johnny T. Nelson, MD is a distinguished board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in shoulder and hand surgery. He graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Dallas, where he played flanker for the university’s rugby football club. He then graduated at the top of his class from the University of Texas Medical School and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) medical honors society.
Dr. Nelson dedicated a year to research at the Laboratory for Regenerative Technologies in Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern University, resulting in numerous peer-reviewed publications. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, followed by a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. He further specialized with an international shoulder fellowship at the Centre Orthopédique Santy in Lyon, France.
Currently practicing at The Bone & Joint Surgery Clinic in Raleigh, North Carolina, Dr. Nelson serves patients statewide. He was the first in the Raleigh-Durham area to perform ultrasound-guided micro-invasive carpal tunnel release in 2022 and trigger finger release in 2023. He lectures internationally, serves on the Executive Committee of the annual MSK Ultrasound Forum, and has multiple research publications in leading journals.
