Learn more about ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release with UltraGuideCTR from Dr. Hanna*: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4arbG2_RXg
Dr. Kathryn Hanna is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty certification in hand and upper extremity surgery. She specializes in the diagnosis, surgical, and non-surgical treatment of conditions affecting the hand, wrist, and elbow, helping patients restore function and return to the activities they love.
From a young age, Dr. Hanna knew she wanted to become a doctor—there's even a photo of her at age four listening to her baby sister's heartbeat with a toy stethoscope. Drawn to working with her hands and building things, she was naturally inspired to pursue surgery. During medical school, she fell in love with orthopedics because it focused on helping people regain function and quality of life.
Dr. Hanna has been certified in Ultrasound-Guided Carpal Tunnel Release. UGCTR is a minimally invasive procedure that uses real-time ultrasound and a tiny wrist incision to safely release the ligament pressing on the median nerve. Because the device protects surrounding structures and requires only minimal soft-tissue disruption, patients typically experience less pain and a much faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery, often returning to normal activities within just a few days. This approach avoids general anesthesia, reduces scarring, and provides a precise, modern alternative to conventional carpal tunnel surgery.
Her advice to patients: "Before surgery, it's important to have a clear understanding of your goals. Knowing what the problem is, how surgery will help, and what will change afterward sets the foundation for a successful recovery."
Outside of her work at Orthopaedic Associates of Maine, Dr. Hanna enjoys spending time outdoors with her family. She loves summers at her lake camp on an island and winter days spent snowshoeing, skiing, or ice fishing.
